The Story

Inspired by traditional Indigenous craft, designed for modern day living.

MoMA Exclusive: Designers Shane Liu and Yun-Fan Chang, along with Pangcah native Tipus Hafay, founded Kamaro’an which means “a place to live” in the language of the Indigenous people from Taiwan’s east coast. The brand reinterprets traditional Pangcah craftsmanship through contemporary designs, including this Natural Dyed Woven Triangle Tote Bag. Made from water-repellant canvas, each one is woven, naturally dyed and assembled by Pangcah craftspeople at a studio in Hualien, Taiwan. The yellow is dyed with Fukugi bark grown in Hualien; the purple with betel nut core.

The woven handle is constructed using Pangcah Otal weave, a continuous-thread technique that was once used on stone pestles for rice brewing, while the triangular form references rice bags from the Japanese colonial period. The woven handle is removable, with a snap-closure handle underneath, making the bag easier to clean. Hidden interior and, on the large versions, exterior pockets provide organized storage for your day-to-day essentials. The bag has a snap closure inside to keep your essentials secure. The Kamaro-an Woven Triangle Tote Bag measures 13h x 12.5w x 4.5”d with a 6” strap drop (Small) and 20.5h x 18w x 5”d with an 11” strap drop (Large).
