The Story

Designer Jomo Tariku learned his craft while growing up in Ethiopia, during summer breaks at a local furniture builder in Addis Ababa. He later went on to study industrial design at the University of Kansas and is now based in Virginia. For this Boraatii Stool, Tariku was inspired by a headrest, carved from a single piece of wood by an Oromo artist, used in the late 19th century to preserve the elaborate hairstyle of its owner while they slept. (Oromo people are a Cushitic ethnic group native to Ethiopia and Kenya.)

The
Boraatii Stool is made in Virginia, crafted with precision using a CNC wood-milling machine and hand-finished and assembled. This height-adjustable design is made from water-resistant Baltic birch plywood with a double black stain finish and is made to order. It measures 15.75–17.9h  x 17.4w x 8.5"d.
